Surprises

I came home to two lovely surprises tonight :D

Firstly the pendant that I won in the KanYoFuse giveaway on Life, Love, YARN arrived in the mail! Very exciting! And here it is!

An awesome thing about getting this one of the three (which is more orange than it looks in this photo ) is that I just coloured my hair red too so they go together :D

Then as I went outside to take a photo of the pendant - and I found this tiny flower in the garden bed - I hadn't even seen it start growing :D

Juggling Camp this weekend, hoping I can time find to pack!

I worked very hard yesterday and finished my first Doctor Who pattern.

I will be adding several more Doc patterns as soon as I can get them finished.
This is the one I sold:

Update to TARDIS pattern and 9th Doctor

Hello all,

It just didn't seem right to have a TARDIS without a light on top so I have made a little one to add on to the pattern this morning.

I have also finished my 9th Doctor (Christopher Eccleston) so have photograped the two together to show you :)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It's a very simple, rounded TARDIS, so don't expect crisp edges or perfect detail. It is made all in one piece (because I hate sewing) and then the windows and such are stitched on to the outside. It would be a good beginner project if you are new to amigurumi, as the sides of the box are simple Single Crochet stitches (many of them!)
Feel free to ask me if you're having trouble with anything. If you do make your own TARDIS I would love to see how it turns out!!
Enjoy!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Would love to hear what you think of the 9th Doctor, I am concerned that the choice to leave him without hair was a bad one, but I am not sure what else I could have done when his hair is so very short!

Free crochet TARDIS pattern

I decided the photography of my mini Doctors would not be complete without a TARDIS, so I am providing a free crochet TARDIS pattern/tutorial for anyone who would like to have their own.

(A crocheted light has also been added to the top of the TARDIS, read about the update here)

I am working hard on my patterns for the Doctors, and hope to have a few of them finished soon :) If you do make your own TARDIS I would love to see how it turns out!!

Enjoy!

Doctor Who - The First Doctor

Well I've finished the first doctor - William Hartnell

Download free pattern for mini Doctors from the patterns page

As I mentioned previously, my friend is in South Africa (exciting ^.^) and has given me her sewing machine to play with for a month.

I wanted to machine sew the hair, because it looks better that way for photos, but it is possible to hand sew it, and I'm on working on how best to explain this in the pattern.

Apart from the hair, the rest of the pattern is almost finished, and because the Doctors are all similar in body shape, this will be a large part of the work in creating the patterns. I was thinking about putting some kits on my etsy shop, because people are not likely to have the range of colours needed lying around.

Whether anyone would be interested in making the earlier Doctors I'm not sure, but it will be nice to have patterns for the set.

Library craft meetup

Again I have proof that I have stumbled across the perfect job for me :)

The newest development is that a bunch of the library people have decided to get together every once in a while for a crafting session.

This makes me very happy, because I am a bit of a strange one with my crafts (crocheting and knitting at every available opportunity - including while walking down the street on my lunch breaks, during lectures or seminars, during coffee breaks, on trains etc.) - and I have worried that people might perceive these tendencies as anti-social - thinking perhaps that I am bored with company and need distraction.

So it it lovely to have these worries put to rest by having lots of people around me who like to do the same - and affirming that craft can be a very social activity. I had the flu during the first meeting, but I'm determined to make it to the next one.

We even have a blog! Feel free to take a look!

Oh, and just for fun, an in-progress image of my amigurumi TARDIS - I will be adding the simple pattern here soonish for those who would like to make their own

I won a giveaway!

Eeep! I have been entering quite a few handmade crafty giveaways from blogs that I follow - and today I actually won one!

Life, Love, Yarn held this giveaway for one of three pendants from KanYoFuse. I was the third winner so I get to have the one that the other two winners don't choose - they are all awesome and I am very excited to see which one I get!

The next contest I am very excited about entering is this one at lovecharlesvintage for a beautiful summer dress :D

Doctor Who amigurumi progress

Well after posting a note about my 5th Doctor on Crafty_Tardis and Who_Knits I have had a lot of traffic today from around the US *waves to everyone*

So I thought I would post up a couple of in progress pictures that I have taken so far.

William (1st doctor) is pretty much complete - here he is pictured without his jacket. He is looking very handsome I think :)

Here is an image of the 7th doctor's body, complete with his little vest with question marks on it. The tininess of my Whos (about 3 inches tall) meant that I could get extreme detail, but i think it turned out cute nevertheless

The next is the head and tie of the 8th doctor, who is my favourite so far I think. He has some hair now but I haven't taken any photos of that yet.

Thanks for dropping by everyone, I'll be working on the patterns soon to add to my etsy shop. Let me know if you think you'd be interested, or which doctor you would be most interested in - it will make me work faster :)

Some older things - friendship bands and such

I was over at This Year's Dozen having a look at her wonderfully photographed macrame belt tutorials, and I noticed her use of the double-half-hitch knots to create distinctive V-shaped lines in the belts and this reminded me of some of my creations of a few years back.

My hands can't really stand up to the strain of the intensive knotting required to make these frequently, but here's a couple of images of the friendship bands I have made:

These last images are from a bookmark I made for my favourite classics tutor at the end of my honours year. It has 4 tiny trojan horses and the word 'Troy' in the centre. It was very difficult to design because of its asymmetrical pattern, but I was quite happy with the result

(and yes, it should be sitting on Homer rather than Ovid, but I didn't have it on hand when I took these photos :p)

Flowers and flu

Well it's been a pretty yucky week. I went down with the flu on thursday night and have only just got out of bed again. Haven't been able to do anything but sleep, so am feeling very craft deprived.

I had a nice surprise, however, when I finally emerged into the sunlight this afternoon. I looked out my window to find that my first ever plant has flowered!

I am very proud because it is the first one I have grown myself from a seed/bulb. The 8 lavender plants outside the front door have also flowered and look lovely in the sunlight.

Upcycled coats and dresses

Something I've been feeling quite inspired by recently is upcycled dresses and coats. I like the idea of transforming old into new. In the same way, I feel getting an old jumper and pulling out the wool to knit with would be an interesting endeavour (but probably laborious.

My favourite shop producing upcycled garments is Katwise.

Her output is prolific, and coats and dresses seem to be sold very quickly.
No wonder, for every item is one-of-a-kind, and the textures and colours are amazing! These dresses and coats wouldn't be for everyone, but I love seeing what she produces each week and reading the individual descriptions about the fabrics and colours used.
