A new pattern has recently been brewing...
The idea was to create a pattern that featured metallic yarn without the need to knit a full scarf or garment.
The gloves are knit from the bottom up, in three sections. The first and third sections involve creating two layers for a shadowed appearance; the middle section involves a cable on the back of the hand creating a vignette effect. The pattern skill level is likely 'challenging' due to the need to manage two sets of magic loops in the round, and to the fiddly-ness of metallic yarn.

Pattern details - Linen stitch gloves
These simple, cosy linen stitch gloves make the perfect gift for winter. Knit from the fingers down, a woven effect is easily created in a cosy and stretchy fabric. Slipped stitches provide a useful recipe for breaking up variegated yarn, while the regular stitch provides an elegant design for both men and women.
Needle size: US 8 - 5.0 mm
Yarn weight: DK / 8 ply
Sizes: Small - 16cm 6.25” | Medium - 20cm 8” | Large - 23cm 9” around knuckles

They are based on the Fezzes are cool pattern (.pdf), but I love the changes that have been made - adding the "cherry red" trim to match the bow tie, and removing the flip-top mitts for a different style.

I thought I'd post up my wips today :)
Harumi shawl (rav link) by Emily Ross is up the back, and just needs to be properly photographed.
Amelia by Laura Chau is down the front right. It is taking a while to knit up but I've almost finished the body, then just need to do the sleeves.
Clearly I'm still obsessed with teal. I'm not super happy with the variegation in our handdyed teal yarn when knit up, but I'll still enjoy the colours while wearing the gloves and cowl that are in progress :)

I had an idea to create some mitts that laced up like a corset. My first attempt wasn't quite what I was visualising, but it's an interesting effect.
Unlike some other corset mitts I've seen, I decided to make the holes part of the glove rather than leaving an opening for lacing. This would hopefully avoid stretch in the edges of the knitting after lots of wear. They were quite fun to make :)

Made some changes to the linen stitch panel as I was getting some RSI issues. Think I made this one too long in the foot and not long enough in the leg (ran out of yarn). Hope dad likes them, think they may have to be for only wearing in the house.

Recently discovered that I have now practised enough continental knitting that I can easily colour strand holding yarn with continental left-hand and English right hand.
It's soooo much faster than dropping and picking up each strand. This was a very nice discovery because I hear of people working up to this, whereas I've somehow learnt it accidentally.
Here's a pic of my twined knitting (Scandanavian technique where you knit alternatively with two strands of yarn and twist them behind each stitch) project using this technique:

Fezzes are cool - convertible mitts
Discounted sample mitts worked as a test for my updated Ghost Train Gloves pattern.
Only difference between right and left hands is a change in the thumb gusset where I was testing two different styles to find the best fit. Pop across to Etsy if you're interested
Hi lovely knitters
I just wanted to let you know that I've added an option to this pattern for knitting the gloves in the round. I always prefer to knit in the round because then there's no seaming. There's also some improved images of cables and some general cleaning up of the pattern.
Sooo many drafts to get my Ruins pattern right, and a few different colour combinations and wool types too...

Much of my time in the last couple of weeks has been taken up working samples for a new pattern. Completed the first draft yesterday, but there is still much work to be done before it is ready. I will learn from previous experience and get it properly testing this time.
The design includes a small colour stranded chart, basket weave and horizontal stitch. I think I might substitute the dark brown for something lighter. What do you think?

Sadly no Wednesday Wonders this week (or last week). Work draining all energy at the moment but hopefully that should get better from next week on. Just got home from netball (always come home with three times the energy I left with - yay!) so am quickly going to show off my latest knit:
This is my right glove from Julia Mueller's (from Laris Designs) Chimera - a pattern I had been lusting after for months and months (and not just for the awesome name). I just loved it's crazy layers and the mystery of its construction.
I wasn't disappointed - it is most enjoyable pattern I have ever knitted ^_^ and I've learned a lot from the knit about construction and pattern writing. Perfect yarn and pattern combination - feels so cosy and perfectly sized when wearing.
To knit this pattern you’d want to be pretty comfy with working in the round, it’s a quite tight knit (esp. first double layer section and thumb) - love the rolled sections/edges, and cool to see that an alternative method for those not comfy with the technique is provided. Left glove almost done too :)
