Chiaroscuro fingerless gloves
Chiaroscuro - in painting, photography and cinema - strong contrasts between dark and light
serving to achieve a sense of depth and volume...
To celebrate the release of Chiaroscuro, my Ruins pattern is now available for free.
Dreaming of castles in the mist, and adventure? Ruins is an intermediate pattern, written for a knitter comfortable with a circular needle and the magic loop (or two circular needles).
With three sections using different techniques (stranded colour work, basket weave and layers) this pattern is perfect for the restless wanderer who quickly tires of repetitive patterns.
Alternatives are provided for the first two sections if you are finding the techniques too tricky.
Many thanks to those who purchased this pattern while it was available! Profit generated during the last year was donated to charity.
“There, down the roofless wall did glow
The zun upon the grassy vloor,
An’ weakly-wandren winds did blow,
Unhinder’d by a door”

New pattern out today!
This pattern was designed to feature metallic yarn (or other specialty fibres) without the commitment of a full garment. The delicacy of the metallic yarn will affect the durability of the project for every-day wear, but will also produce an individual creation depending on the yarn combinations chosen, like a small work of art.
The gloves are knit from the bottom up, in three sections. The first and third sections involve creating two layers for a shadowed appearance; the middle section involves a cable on the back of the hand creating a vignette effect. This pattern is rated as challenging - due to the nature of the delicate yarn, and the fiddly-ness of having two magic loops available simultaneously.
$2.50 - All profit donated monthly to charity.

Hi all, I've finally written a new pattern. It's been great to get back into the creative process. Enjoy!
A big thank you to testers Elizek and Steelelady, who created lovely versions which I will hopefully feature in future posts.
Pattern details - Linen stitch gloves
These simple, cosy linen stitch gloves make the perfect gift for winter. Knit from the fingers down, a woven effect is easily created in a cosy and stretchy fabric. Slipped stitches provide a useful recipe for breaking up variegated yarn, while the regular stitch provides an elegant design for both men and women.
Needle size: US 8 - 5.0 mm
Yarn weight: DK / 8 ply
Sizes: Small - 16cm 6.25” | Medium - 20cm 8” | Large - 23cm 9” around knuckles

Hi all, today I wanted to show you these gloves made by Sarahj417 on Ravelry (login required). Aren't they lovely?
They are based on the Fezzes are cool pattern (.pdf), but I love the changes that have been made - adding the "cherry red" trim to match the bow tie, and removing the flip-top mitts for a different style.
Thanks for allowing me to share these Sarah!

As this pattern has been out for a few years, it seemed time to make it freely available. Unfortunately the original yarn has been discontinued, but other bulky yarns should provide a similar effect. Many thanks to those who supported the pattern previously. Enjoy :)

After a long hiatus I've been working on a new design. It's been rewarding to return to the creative community after too long spent on lonely distance-study this year.
The Testing Pool is a Ravelry group devoted to connecting designers with testers, proofreaders, and translators. Ten minutes after posting up a request for testers for my new design, I had four volunteers. I'm always amazed at the generous spirit of knitters and crocheters!

For all the knitters who have been missing out on the Doctor Who love, here is my Big and Cuddly pattern converted into knitting ^_^ enjoy!

This is certainly not the most elegant knitting pattern, having been converted from crochet, but it worked surprisingly well. I still encourage all those knitters who haven't yet picked up a hook to try it, because crochet really is best for certain purposes.
Pattern includes instructions for both knitting flat / knitting in the round
So beginners can have a go too. I hope to see lots of knitted characters spring up, like all the wonderful crochet creations out there. View this pattern on Ravelry
Have a look at the directions for colour and decoration in the Big and Cuddly crochet series to help you create other characters
“It’s a fez, I wear a fez now… Fezzes are cool”
(The Big Bang, 2010)
Flip top mitts featuring Matt Smith’s bowtie and favourite fez. This pattern idea to me in a flash and it made me laugh, so I just had to write it up - I hope you laugh too! Mitts flip towards front of hand & fasten with buttons so as not to obscure bowtie ^_^ enjoy!

Hi lovely knitters
I just wanted to let you know that I've added an option to this pattern for knitting the gloves in the round. I always prefer to knit in the round because then there's no seaming. There's also some improved images of cables and some general cleaning up of the pattern.
My new pattern at last! Much work to get this one published, many thanks to all the lovely testers

Much of my time in the last couple of weeks has been taken up working samples for a new pattern. Completed the first draft yesterday, but there is still much work to be done before it is ready. I will learn from previous experience and get it properly testing this time.
The design includes a small colour stranded chart, basket weave and horizontal stitch. I think I might substitute the dark brown for something lighter. What do you think?

First I wanted to show you the sample I have knitted thrice so far for converting my crochet Mobius Mitts pattern into a knitted version. It has been fun to design for the challenge of it needing to be reversible - so I went with a 2x2 rib with two reversible cables
Also just needed to praise Bendigo Woollen Mills for being thrice as awesome as the basic yarn shops here, beautiful yarn, great value and for shipping my wool so fast that it arrived within 2 days of the order! 8ply Midnight Tweed and 12ply Red Tweed show below ^_^

“Do but listen for a moment to the wind in this unnatural valley while we speak so low” (The Signalman – Dickens)

Worked very hard most of the day to get this pattern finished - I really like how it turned out. I think I will be making myself a pair of these for this winter when I next get a moment :)
The straight rib and twisting cable design of these gloves inspired the title and theme of this pattern.

This blog has been very quiet lately because life has been busy, but there will be lots more coming up soon!
We're heading into Winter here in Australia - so I've been working on a knitting pattern for this Green Tea scarf.
I wanted a warm but not too thick scarf for myself, and this is what I came up with. It's a simple cable pattern waith a colour change in the centre.

$2.00 US
The pattern is for sale on ETSY and RAVELRY and the scarf itself will be in my Etsy shop in the next few days.
Knitting pattern for those wanting to try some easy cables. If you find you’re really struggling, you can decide not to add in the colour change, and you’ll still have a lovely plait/cable scarf.

Yarn
This pattern does not depend on any particular yarn, each will bring its own texture and feel to the scarf - Saying that, you probably want 10-12 ply to make the scarf thick enough to wear.
